The AMD 3500+ 64bit processor is superior to the Pentium 4. Whoever tells you otherwise is either lying or stupid.

AMD AMD AMD AMD. Why? Two reasons. One is that the AMD will simply preform better as a gaming platform and WILL be faster. The other is that Intel is in trouble with a lawsuit FROM AMD and it might effect your warrenty and software updates/driver updates.
Oh, and AMD is ussualy cheaper.

what is your purpose going to be for the mew CPU?
Gaming, 3D rendering, graphics design.
Depending on what your going todo will depend on the processor you need.

To be honest? For one thing, besides preformance, they annoy me. They're waaay too kocky, and hop on the boat with Intel to selling cheap computers with cheap OS's and cheap parts (Want to know my nightmare? A cheap dell computer with Microsoft ME, a celeron processor and a motherboard I've never heard of.)
The bottom line is this: Intels are for desktops, that is assuming that you've rejected to acknowlage that the Celerons and Centrinos exsist. If you want a desktop computer for media ONLY, then you a p4 is a quick solution (I say quick as it isn't the cheapist or best assumed desition.) AMDs are for computer gaming. They've been designed to work with certian operatining systems to optomize preformance on the running task and neglecting backround applications (that's why they're said to be not so hot with multitasking, such as running a media player while playing a game). Your processor will put most of it's power into what you're currently doing. You play a game, and your AMD will make sure that game is the most important thing on its list.

I prefer AMD. Pent 4 isn't bad. I have it on my other computer, but still... go with AMD...

OK get out those rotten tomatos .....
I confess .... I'm running a P4. There, I said it.
(Dell XPS laptop 3.4GHz P4 with ATI Radeon 9800 Mobility)
I'm also a closet Mac-user - an early G4 that still runs nicely. And I love it.
(... the only thing worse than being a geek - is being an "outsider" geek. )
Now I'm calling out to all the fellow "outsider" geeks to stand forth with me in soliarity! Apparently, we have little to brag about, but we can't lurk quietly as those AMD bullies belittle us in this thread.
I'm "Rosa Parks" and I'm staying right here on this bus...

Of course you're running on an Intel.. You got a Dell. I've yet to see a Dell that didn't run on some concoction by Intel... Dell is like Intel's little monkey.. Intell throws them a penny and they preform.

I'm running a P4 3.2Ghz, it does what I need it to, and it was cheap as hell with the educational discounts. Never had a need for anything else since this.

Microsoft ME is the DEVIL. It stands for Mellinium Edition and it's designed to be a watered down and cheap as hell version of Windows NT. It's no more than Windows 95 with a virus, cleverly desguised with a lack luster Windows NT GUI.

Someone needs to make a good windows emulator for Lenix. It sucks being stuck with XP professional even when you don't use a single standard feature on it.

I have owned both AMD & Intel processors. Neither AMD or Intel are bad processors. Right now AMD has the edge. That does not mean that Intel chips are not good for gaming or anything else.
I always tell people to Shop around first. There are good deals out there for pre-built systems if you wait and jump in on the one for you. I do this with Dell everytime I get ready to upgrade. Once a month Dell will have a decent deal. Every 2-3 months they have a great deal. I am sure it depends on their inventory stocks and also their need to bump up sales. This is when I try to purchase a computer.
My new Dell Dim 5100 is a fine computer. It is a 3.4Ghz 650 series chip. It is a 800FSB with a 2meg L2 cache. That is what sold me on that processor was the L2 cache. I have seen no slow down when muti-tasking with this chip set. Every Saturday night I always forget that my Norton is set to run the virus checker. I never realize this till after I close out GuildWars and then see the Norton screen showing me my results. The computer never slowed down during that time. I also keep my email opened and a few websites while playing. I also have everything graphic wise maxed out.
It boils down with what you are comfortable with. I personally want stability with speed. Dell computers offer that. They are not designed to be tricked out too much. They do lock down their BIOs and any attempt to change the BIOs will void your warranty. EDIT: I should make clear by meaning to change your BIOs I mean Burning in a different BIOs.
With a good processor from either AMD or Intel added with a fair amont of ram and a decent video card you will have more then enough power/speed to enjoy any game out there.
